New Zealand opens the Door to Marriage Equality

New Zealand has taken the plunge and introduced Marriage Equality – as of this week Gay and Lesbian couples became equal under New Zealand’s marriage law.

31 same sex couples tied the knot on the day, including two Australian men who were among the first gay couples to marry in New Zealand. The two Australians were sponsored by Tourism New Zealand.

Tourism New Zealand is marketing the country as a place gay couples can tie the knot, and even came up with rainbow version of the 100% Pure NZ.

Positively Wellington Tourism chief executive David Perks says we have some of the world’s finest food producers, winemakers and craft beer brands, so we’re sure to put on a good party.

“We’re working with Tourism New Zealand as other regions will as well to make sure that all potential international visitors know what they can do here and now that includes I think a same-sex wedding.

He says today’s weddings will be the first of many, where couples come to New Zealand from countries that don’t recognise same-sex marriage.

Post script: My partner Cynthia and I are planning a wedding in January.  It is fantastic to feel the support in the community for this – the enthusiasm is overwhelming.
