Whangarei Heads is 30 minutes from Whangarei, New Zealand's most Northern City. It is not on the road to anywhere else, so most people don't know about it. Whangarei is the northern most city in New Zealand, on the way to the Bay of Islands, or more importantly to the Tutukaka Coast (we are parochial up here) and the Poor Knights Islands.
